Sensorimotor Stage (0-2 yrs old) Flashcards
Substage 1
MODIFICATION OF REFLEXES
- roughly birth to 1 month
sucking, grasping, staring, listening.
Generalize, strengthen, differentiate behaviors that began as reflexes.
Reflexes begin to become schemas.
Organized patterns of behaviors.
Substage 2
PRIMARY CIRCULAR REACTIONS
- roughly 1-4 months
Schemes develop rapidly primary circular reactions.
Repetition of pleasurable actions (rattle)
Start exploring their own body.
Thumb sucking, focalizations, visual exploration.
Substage 3
SECONDARY CIRCULAR REACTIONS
- roughly 4-8 months
External focus
Procedures for making interesting sights last.
Initially, by chance… Then repeat.
Substage 4
COORDINATION OF SECONDARY SCHEMES
- roughly 8-12 months
Combine schemes to attain goals. Planning and intentionally do certain behavior No longer by chance. Means-end behavior Schemes="mobile cognitive tools"
Substage 5
TERTIARY CIRCULAR REACTIONS
- roughly 12-18 months
Repetition with variation and experimentation
Purposeful trial-and-error exploration
Discover new means (might put toys in box on accident but then realize it can be used to play basketball)
Substage 6
INVENTION OF NEW MEANS THROUGH MENTAL COMBINATIONS
- roughly 18-24 months
Plan new means (after realizing that a box can be used as a basketball game they PLAN to do so)
Explore mentally in addition to physically (see rattle and see dog in room. Knows that if he makes the rattle shake it’ll scare the dog or throw it at the dog)
Thought goes underground. They do not always speak on it they just do it. We cannot see what they are thinking.
Overt becomes covert.
Beginnings of symbolic thinking
Use of entail symbols to represent objects and events.
They need to see object that represents the real ones (baby doll, small kitchen, car, etc.)
Imitation***
Overview of Sensorimotor Stage
- Child actively learns about the properties of objects and relations among them.
- Cognitive structures become more tightly organized.
- Behavior gradually becomes more intentionally. (Planning things ahead of time; intentional)
- Self is gradually differentiated from the environment
