Q

Substage 1

Substage 5
TERTIARY CIRCULAR REACTIONS
- roughly 12-18 months

A

Substage 6
INVENTION OF NEW MEANS THROUGH MENTAL COMBINATIONS
- roughly 18-24 months

A

Plan new means (after realizing that a box can be used as a basketball game they PLAN to do so)
Explore mentally in addition to physically (see rattle and see dog in room. Knows that if he makes the rattle shake it’ll scare the dog or throw it at the dog)
Thought goes underground. They do not always speak on it they just do it. We cannot see what they are thinking.
Overt becomes covert.
Beginnings of symbolic thinking
Use of entail symbols to represent objects and events.

Imitation***

Q

Overview of Sensorimotor Stage

A
  1. Child actively learns about the properties of objects and relations among them.
  2. Cognitive structures become more tightly organized.
  3. Behavior gradually becomes more intentionally. (Planning things ahead of time; intentional)
  4. Self is gradually differentiated from the environment
    * general characteristics of all stages*
