Senses And The Nervous System Flashcards
Stimulus
A stimulus is something that causes a response e.g. If you trip you put your arms out to catch yourself.
Sensitivity
Detecting and responding to a stimulus.
Lens
Focuses the light onto the retina.
Iris
Controls the amount of light entering the eye.
Cornea
Allows light through.
Pupil
The hole that allows light through.
Ciliary muscle
Changes the shape of the lens for focusing.
Retina
Contains the light sensitive cells.
Optic nerve
Carries messages to the brain.
Nervous system
Brain, spinal cord and all the nerves.
Sensory nerve
Sends a message to the brain from the sense organ. (Sends message to the brain).
Motor nerve
Sends a message from the brain to a muscle. (Sends message away from the brain).
Messages
Are sent along nerves as pulses of electricity.
The eye contains
The cornea, iris, lens, pupil, retina, optic nerve and ciliary muscle.
