Sensation
The electrical activity in the body created by stimuli in the environment such as light, sound, chemicals and pressure.
Vision / Sight
Source - Light waves striking the eye
Receptors - Rods and Cones in the retina
Smell
Source - Chemical molecules breathed in through the nose
Receptors - Millions of receptors at the top of the nasal cavity
Taste
Source - Chemical molecules in the mouth
Receptors - basic tongue receptors for sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami
Touch
Source - pressure, warmth, cold, pain on the skin
Receptors - skin receptors detect pressure, warmth, cold and pain
Hearing
Source - sound waves strike the outer ear
Receptors - cochlear hair cells in the inner ear
Kinesthesia
the system for sensing the position and movement of individual body parts found in muscles, tendons and joints. (Perception).
Vestibular Sense
the sense of body movements and position; include sense of balance and is found in the ears
