Senses Flashcards
How can gaseous substances be detected?
They are dissolved in mucus surrounding cilia located at distal ends of olfactory neurons
Where do axons of olfactory neurons pass through?
Through foramina (small openings) in the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone
What is needed in order to detect a smell?
Without the receptor cell on the cilia smelling is not possible
Where are the olfactory interpreting centers located?
Within the temporal lobes and the base of the
frontal lobes of the cerebrum
What does 20/70 vision mean?
A person can see from 20 feet what the normal eye sees from 70 feet -> less normal vision
20/10: can see from 20 feet what the normal eye can see from 20 feet -> better vision
What does Astigmatism cause?
Blurred vision, because some parts of the image on the retina are in focus, while other parts are not in focus
When does Color-deficient vision occur?
When the retina is lacking cones that are sensitive to red or green wavelengths (an X chromosome-linked/sex-linked trait)
What happens to the near point of accommodation?
It increases with age because the lens is less flexible and elastic
What structure secrets wax?
The ceruminous gland
Which structure is attached to the tympanic membrane?
Malleus
Name of the space that contains the auditory ossicles?
Tympanic cavity -> contains: Malleus, incus, and stapes
The function of the ossicles?
The ossicles in the middle ear conduct and amplify the sound waves from the tympanic membrane to the oval window
Which structure is attached to the oval window?
Stapes
Where are the hearing receptors located?
In the inner ear, they have hairs that are in contact with the tectorial membrane
What is inside the membranous labyrinth?
Endolymph, the membranous labyrinth is covered by the bony labyrinth
