- Decentralisation of manufacturing activity
* Centralisation of management, control and planning activity
Sassen (1991)
London and similar cities:

The arrival of high-skilled and low-skilled migrants in global cities can invite a reactionary sense of place among existing residents.
A reactionary sense of place
Place as bounded, static, and internally coherent or pure.
Place as belonging to locals and under threat from global elites, low-skilled economic migrants, refugees etc.
What are activity spaces (Massey 1995: 56)
The spatial network of links and activities, connections and locations, within which individuals operate
Transnational urbanism (Smith 2001)
- Migrants produce urban spaces (e.g. Koreatown, LA)
- Los Angeles is not just a shoeshine economy (as depicted by the global cities literature)
- Cities are crossroads or meeting grounds for multiple networks
