what is perception?
everything you see, feel, hear, smell and touch
what is perception a product of?
the biological machinery inside your brain
what are the four things we can sense?
- light
- chemicals
- temperature
- mechanical forces
what is the process of perception?
physical world/distal stimuli -> input from physical world -> mental world/proximal stimuli
what does empiricism state?
knowledge comes from outside the mind
the environment shapes the brain and our experience of the world
nurture argument
what does rationalism state?
certain fundamental processes drive shape/knowledge
our brains architecture shapes and constrains everyone
nature argument
what are the 3 stages of perception?
1) sample information
2) encode and register it
3) interpret and use it
what is light?
light is an electromagnetic radiation from 360nm - 760nm
it is also energy reflected and absorbed by surfaces
how does light being impacting surfaces affect perception?
light is reflected and absorbed by surfaces
this changes the properties of light
light waves now contain information about surfaces
the brain ectracts information frm light
