Sensation and Perception Flashcards
sensation
raw input, info provided by the sensory system that places individual in relation to environment
perception
interpretation of different sensations (events and objects) and making sense of things around us
sensory conspicuity
the extent to which aspects of a stimulus (color/luminance) influence how easily it can be registered by the senses
attention conspicuity
the interaction of aspects of a stimulus (color/form) with aspects of a person (attention/knowledge) that determine how likely a stimulus is to be consciously perceived
direct perception
perception without the need for top-down processing
structure of the visual system
ventral stream (what), dorsal stream (where)
Ventral stream
a pathway in the brain that deals with the visual info of what objects are
Dorsal stream
a pathway which carries visual info about the spatial location of an object
Phenomenological experience
our conscious experience of the world
Azimuth of a sound
determined by binaural cues which rely on comparing the input in both ears (ex: judging sound direction)
Elevation of a sound
determined by spectral cues
Distance coordinate of a sound
how far a sound is from the listener
Sensory overload
a situation in which there is too much incoming sensory info to be adequately processed
Haptic perception
combines info from more than one sense (tactile and kinesthetic)
Proprioception
knowledge of the position of the body and its parts
