Memory Flashcards
Declarative Memory
LTM in which humans store memories of facts based on experience
Non-declarative memory
unconscious or unintentional recall of info regarding how to do certain things (ride a bike)
Working Memory (STM)
a hypothetical short-term memory system that serves as a mental workspace in which many operations are done on new input and retrieved memories
Phonological Loop
storage for verbally presented items
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
storage for visually presented items
Central executive
overall control of working memory through inhibition, shifting and updating information.
Stages of memory
Encoding (input), storage, retrieval (output)
Structural processing
superficial features of input (shape)
Acoustic processing
sound of a word
Semantic processing
deeper level, meaningful content of a word
Levels of precessing
structural, acoustic, semantic
Episodic memory (LTM)
memory for specific episodes/events from personal experience (effortful)
Semantic memory (LTM)
memory for general knowledge (words/shapes) without reference to any specific episode (automatic)
Explicit memory (LTM)
memory that a person can report consciously and deliberately (effortful)
Implicit memory (LTM)
memory whose influence can be detected but which a person is unable to report consciously and deliberately (automatic)
