Sensation And Perception Flashcards
What’s a sensation and give an example
Physical stimulation eg light hitting the retina at the back of your eye
What’s a perception
Organisation and interpretation of sensory info
What’s the difference between sensation and perception?
Difference between feeling and thinking
Sensation being the feeling and perception the interpretation (thinking)
Examples of misinterpreted depth cues in illusions
The ponzo illusion, the müller-lyer illusion, the Ames room
Illusion of ambiguous figure
Rubin’s Vase
Two faces or a vase outline?
How does the Ames room work
Peep hole for the observer
Back wall slopes but that’s not apparent
People can swap places and either grow or shrink whilst walking along
What does Gregory suggest?
Clear difference between sensation and perception
What does Gibson suggest?
Sensation and perception pretty much the same
Names of Binocular depth cues?
Retinal disparity and convergence
Names of Monocular depth cues?
Height in plane
Relative size
Occlusion
Linear perspective
What is a binocular depth cue?
Cues that are only detected when both eyes are used
What is a monocular depth cue?
Perceptual cues that can only be detected with one eye
Define convergence
The closer an object is the harder the eyes have to work, this gives the brain info about depth and distance.
Define height in plane
Objects higher in the visual field seem further away
Define linear perspective
When parallel lines come together
