sensation and perception Flashcards
what is sensation
the botton up process by which our senses receive and relay outside stimuli it is a physical input
name the 5 senses
- wave sense
- sight/ sound
- chemical senses
- taste smell
- neural sense
- touch
what are 3 things determine our ability to sense a stimuli
- are we equipped
- “strength” of stimuli
- psychological state
absolute threshold
the minimum stimulation needed to register a particular stimulus fifty percent of time. Not same for everyone
difference threshold
the point at which you can tell the difference between 2 stimuli.(difference in color)
signal detection theory
a model for predicting how and when a person will detect a weak stimuli, based on context.
sensory adaption
we adjust to regular or consistent sensory inputs
sensory interaction
we adjust to regular or consistent sensory inputs
what is perception
the top-down way our brains organize and interpret that information and put it into context.(theme 5)
figured ground relationship
the organization of the visual/audible field into objects 9signal) that stands out from their surroundings (sight and noise/noise)
rules of grouping
- Proximity - same dots
- Conituly- cross
- Closure- pie
- Similarity- 2 different dots
attention
the process of what information receives detained mental actively
consciousness
our awareness of ourselves and e=our environment. consciousness= Wakefulness+awareness.
selective attention
the focusing of consciousness awareness on a particular stimulus or a group of stimuli
inattentional blindness
you often don’t see what you are looking for
