Sensation Flashcards
sensation
refers to reception, transmissoin and interpretation of sensory stimuli
types of sensation
touch (light touch) deep pressure (poke) pain proprioception thermal sensatoin taste and smell
purpose of sensory testing
assess extent of sensory loss and document recovery
determine impairment and functional limitations/training required
conditions associated with sensory loss
CNS dysfunction PNS dysfunction burn arthritis SCI s/p peripheral nerve repair
what to do during sensory evaluation
stabilize arm
demonstrate test on unaffected area with eyes open
eliminate auditory cues and occlude vision
apply stimuli at irregular intervals
same therapist should administer and re-administer assessment
Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments assessment-how many different monofilaments
5
Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments assessment: green filament
normal sensation
Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments assessment: blue filament
diminished light touch
Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments assessment: purple filament
diminished protective sensation
Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments assessment: red filament
loss of protective sensation or loss of all sensation except deep pressure
purpose of sensory desensitization
help client build tolerance for sensation in a hypersensitive area
when to use desensitization
pt experiencing hypersensitivity in area that was injured secondary to nerve injury or complex regional pain syndrome
equipment used for desensitization
different textures
ie. cotton, velvet, flannel, washcloth, light grade sandpaper
protocol for desensitization
patient rubs the affected area lightly, concentrating on the feel of the texture until the area feels less sensitive
15-20 min 3x/day
purpose of sensory reeducaton
client learns to interpret pattern of abnormal sensory impulses followed by an injury to a peripheral nerve
