sensation Flashcards
What is sensation
Stimulation of sense organs
What is perception
selection, organization, and interpretation of sensory input
what is psychophysics
study of how physical stimulati are translated into psychological experience
what’s the absolute threshold
absolute lowest intensity that a stimuli can be detected at; detected 50% of the time
what’s the just noticeable difference (JND)
the amount that something must be changed in order the difference to be detectable
what’s weber’s law
that the size of the JND depends on the size of the initial stimuli
what’s subliminal perception
whether we’re influenced by info that we’re not consciously aware that we’re picking up
what’s sensory adaptation
decline in sensitivity to a stimuli (ie. 10 degrees in the fall = freezing, 10 degrees in spring = hot asf
what does selective attention do
allows us to choose which sensory input to focus on and which to turn down (other channels are still being unconsciously processed tho)
what’s the cocktail party effect
ie. ur talking to someone at a party and all other convo’s are just like a blur to u but then someone says ur name and u hear it, it’s cuz ur still processing everything else going on, just not consciously
what’s inattention blindness
not seeing something that’s in plain sight bc ur focused on something else
what’s change blindness
something changes and u don’t notice it
what are rods for
black & white and low light vision
what r cones for
colour and daylight vision
what’s the external ear
pinna and it collects sound
