consciousness Flashcards
what is consciousness
our subjective the world, our bodies, and our mental perspectives
what’s circadian rhythm
biological changes that roughly occur over a 24 hour basis
characteristics of non rem sleep
slow, regular breathing and heart rate, no rapid eye movements, bp and brain activity at 24h low
characteristics of REM sleep
fast & irregular breathing and heart rate, adrenaline spikes, large muscle paralysis, increased brain wave activity, vivd dreams
how many stages of sleep & how long is each stage
5 stages (4 non rem) each lasting about 90 minutes
stage 1 characteristics
5-10 mins, theta brain waves, hypnagogic imagery
stage 2 characteristics
10-30 min, sleep spindles (sudden burst of activity)
stage 3 & 4
15-30 mins, delta brain waves, crucial to feel rested, suppressed by alcohol
stage 5
10-20 mins, rem sleep, brain activity similar to being awake, becomes longer as night goes on
non rem dreams are
shorter, more thought-like, concerned with daily tasks, repetitive
rem dreams are
more dreams, emotional, illogical, prone yo plot shifts, biologically crucial
what is lucid dreaming
when you’re aware you’re dreaming in a dream; can control it
what’s the most common sleep disorder
insomnia (0-15%) - difficulty going to sleep, staying asleep, or early waking
what’s narcolepsy
rapid and unexpected onset. of sleep
what’s sleep apnea
when u like stop breathing in ur sleep - blockage of airways when u sleep
wat r night terrors
sudden wakin episodes w screaming, perspiring, and confusing followed by a deep sleep
list 5 reasons we possibly dream
- processing emotional memories
- integrating new xp w established memories
- learning new strategies and ways of doing things
- reograinzin and consilidain mom’s
what is manifest vs latent content
manifest = obvious story/plot latent = symbols, what the dream symbolizes
what’s activation-synthesis theory
dreams reflect the brains attempt to make sense of random and internally generated signals during rem
neurocognitive theory
trying to make sense of wake state
what’s a hallucination
realistic perceptual xp in the absence of stimuli
out of body xp
