Senescence and Cell death Flashcards
What is cell death?
A localized process that culminates in the death of the
cell, and is often quite rapid.
What is senescence??
a slower, systemic process that includes nutrient remobilization, and under
most conditions culminates in the death of cells
What is programmed cell death?
An active process to remove unneeded or damaged cells.
What is autophagy?
Eliminates proteins, organelles and pathogens from the cytoplasm, this can contribute to cell death.
What is a caspase?
a family of protease enzymes playing essential roles in programmed cell death
What is the process of senescence?
- Begins with a shift in gene expression (initiation phase)
- Chlorophyll then degrades
- Proteins, lipids and other macromolecules move from area and are redistributed elsewhere
- Nutrients translocated
- Cell death initiated (terminal phase)
What are monocarpic plants?
Plants that flower once, set seed and die.
What can delay senescence?
Cytokinin
How can senescence affect us?
Affects the longevity of cut flowers, quality of foods after harvest, crop yields and stress tolerance.
