Personal views developed through everyday experiences in familiar settings over time
Outsider perspectives
A personal view about discovering a place as a visitor / tourist
Experienced place
Living / visiting in person
Media place
Brought to the individual through the media (e.g., through TV, radio, film, computer, books). Seen through personal ‘eyes’ even though the place may be far away.
Near place
Geographically / emotionally near. Where everyday experiences take place - it is the centre of most lived experiences.
Far place
Geographically / emotionally far. Beyond immediate near experiences.
Endogenous factors
Those that originate from within a place - internally.
Exogenous factors
Those that originate from beyond a place - externally
Sense of place
When a place is given subjective meaning by those who live there.
Endogenous factors - examples
- the physical geography (coast, city, countryside etc.)
- demographic characteristics (people)
- infrastructure, transport etc.
- economic characteristics (e.g., primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary etc.)
- land use (agricultural, urban etc.)
- topography (hills / mountains)
Exogenous factors - examples
- migration (the flow of people)
- trade, flows of money + investment
- resources (e.g., energy, food + water flowing in from other places)
- ideas (e.g., cultural influences)
