Seneca Topic Overview Flashcards
Landform
A feature created by natural processes
Landscape
This includes all the visible features in an area
Why are coastal landscapes distinctive?
Because they occur on the interface between the land and the sea
What are landforms created by?
A combination of weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition
What are the processes affecting coasts? (4)
- deposition
- erosion
- transportation
- weathering
When is a coastal system in a state of dynamic equilibrium?
When the inputs and outputs are balanced
Isolated system
Has no inputs or outputs of energy or matter
Closed system
Has inputs and outputs of energy, but not matter
Open system
Has inputs and outputs of both energy and matter
What type of systems are coastal environments?
Open systems
Feedback
If an element of the system changes, the equilibrium will be upset
Negative feedback
This stabilises the system, allowing it to maintain its dynamic equilibrium
Positive feedback
This means that the system experiences further change, continuing the disruption to the equilibrium
What do systems models show us?
How components (stores) are linked through flows (transfers).
The Littoral Zone
A series of sub-zones to represent the features of the wider coastline from sea to land
