semiotics Flashcards
What is the semiotic theory
It is the study of signs in our culture and how they communicate meaning
What are signs broken down into, and what are they sometimes referred to ? And which theorist created this idea ?
The signifier ( the word) and signified (the actual thing). An arbitrary relationship .
Saussure
what type of sign is referred to when there is no logical connection between the signifier and signified, give an example ?
Arbitrary signs
E.g the word woman vs actual women
Explain what an iconic sign is and give an example
When the signifiers that represent the signified
E.g. Female/male toilets
Explain what an iconic sign is and give an example
When the signifiers that represent the signified
E.g. Female/male toilets
Explain what an Indexical sign is and give an example
It’s when there is a causal link between the signifier + the signified
E.g. paw prints and the word pets
There are 3 types of different types of signs added to Saussure’s theory, which theorists added to his theory, and what are the three signs ?
Pierce
Arbitrary , iconic, and Indexical signs
who created the order of signification ?
What relationship did he study?
What is the first, second, and third order of signification ?
- Barthes
- The relationship between denotation and connotation
- 1st order is denotation (the literal meaning of a sign)
- 2nd order is connotation, when the signified becomes a new signifier pointing to various connotations
- 3rd order is ideology / dominant ideology (group shared connotations / system of ideas / ideals)
What is paradigm?
