  • The relationship between denotation and connotation
  • 1st order is denotation (the literal meaning of a sign)
  • 2nd order is connotation, when the signified becomes a new signifier pointing to various connotations
  • 3rd order is ideology / dominant ideology (group shared connotations / system of ideas / ideals)
