Seminar 4 - Colonization Of Cyrene Flashcards
Disagreement between the Therans and Cyreneans
Cyreneans said that things were going badly in Thera and the oracle said that it would get better if they helped Battus found Cyrene.
Pindar, Pythian Order:
Oracle named Battus the coloniser of fruitful Libya, “find a city of fine chariots”.
Menekles of Barca:
Suggests it was more probable that political turmoil was why Battus left. The citizens of Thera were in conflict - Battus led one of the factions, those he led were driven out of the city and fled.
Herodotus Book 4 145-162: accounts of Battus
Grinds consulted an oracle and they declared he would found a community in Libya, but due to his age he passed the task on to Battus. Corobius on the island of Crete informed the colonists where Libya was. One of every two brothers would be sent to Cyrene where Battus would be King.
