Seminar 1: Intro to Biology Flashcards
What are the common features shared by all forms of life?
-Made of a common set of chemical compounds
-Made up of cells
-Use molecules from the environment to synthesize new molecules.
-Extract energy from the environment and use it to do work
-Regulate their internal environments
-Contain genetic information that enables them to develop, function, and reproduce
-Use a universal genetic code to build proteins
-Exist in populations that evolve over time
What is cell theory?
- Cells are the fundamental unit of life
- All living things comprised of cells
- All cells come from pre existing cells
Modern cells evolved from a common ancestor (same genetic code, chemical composition, cellular structure)
Define cohesion
The tendency of molecules (or any substances) to stick together
Define adhesion?
The binding of once cell or substance to another
What is a buffer solution & its function?
A substance that can transiently accept or release hydrogen ions and thereby resist changes in pH.
Draw an aldehyde (functional grp)
C=OH (end)
Draw a phosphate functional group
O-P=O-O2
What type of interactions are dispersion forces & why
Hydrophobic
Main force b/w NP molecules, causing them to CLUMP together, preventing them from interacting w/ polar molecules like H2O
What type of interactions are dipole dipole?
Hydrophilic
They allow molecules w/ permanent dipoles (partially + & -) to interact w/ H2O
