Semiconductors Flashcards
Define intrinsic conduction
When a semiconductor is heated and a ‘hole’ (electron vacancy) is left.
Define extrinsic condution
-Doping a pure semiconductor material to produce n-type and p-type materials
How are n-type materials made?
-Pentavalent atoms are added to tetravalent atoms (silicon)
-This forms an electron that isnt bonded to anything, allowing flow of current
How are p-type materials made?
-Trivalent atoms are added to tetravalent atoms
-This creates electron vacancies (holes)
-The material behaves as a positive charge.
Define resistivity
Inversely proportional to conductivity
Give 3 examples of tetravalent elements
Carbon, Silicon, Geranium
Give 3 examples of trivalent elements
Boron, Aluminium, Gallium
