Define what an FET is

A

A transistor that uses an electric field to control current flow in a semiconductor
-Made up a gate, source and drain
-Voltage is applied to the gate terminal which controls the conductivity between the source and drain

Q

For an n-channel JFET, what happens when a voltage (Vds) is applied?

A

-The depletion region of the p-type material increases, therefore the resistance increases
-As the n-channel narrows, the JFET obeys Ohm’s law until Vds = Vp where resistance is infinite
-At ‘pinch off’: Vgs = 0, Vds = Vp

Q

What is the major difference between the collector characteristic of a BJT and the drain characteristic of a JFET?

A

-BJT: the collector current is a linear relationship determined by beta and base current
-JFET: The non-linear relationship between Id and Vgs is defined by the Shockley equation

Q

In self-bias for a JFET, what is added and why?

A

A resistor is connected to the source terminal
-eliminates the need for 2 voltage supplies
-Vgs can be determined by the voltage across Rs
