Semi-Conductors Flashcards
What are the two types of Semi-Conductors?
Intrinsic & Extrinsic
What are the properties an Intrinsic S.C?
Has no impurities & #electrons = #holes
What are the properties an Extrinsic S.C?
Has impurities, & 2 types = N-type and P-type
What is the net charge on an N-type S.C?
Negative (N for negative)
What is the net charge on an P-type S.C?
Positive (P for positive)
In an N-type S.C how many valence electrons does the Dopant need to bond? Are there less or more holes?
Dopant needs to have more than > 4 valence electrons in order to bond. This results in less holes
In a P-type S.C how many valence electrons does the Dopant need to bond? Are there less or more holes?
Dopant needs to have less than < 4 valence electrons to bond. This results in more holes
Where is the Fermi lvl located in a N-type S.C?
Just under/below the Conduction Band
Where is the Fermi lvl located in a P-type S.C?
Just above the Valence Band
What is the Band Gap in a Semi-Conductor? **
Band Gap in Less than or equal to <= 3 eV
What happens at 0k in a Semi-Conductor?
Nothing works at 0k. At Temps > 0k, Conductivity = 0
