Semester review - 1st Flashcards
How does sleet form?
Raindrops freeze on their way to the ground
High pressure usually brings dry and sunny weather. Low pressure usually brings:
clouds and some sort of precipitation
What is the difference between a vertebrate and an invertebrate?
Vertebrates have backbones, and invertebrates do not
What are the characteristics of a mammal?
- They have hair or fur at some point in their lives
- Have a constant internal body temperature
- They feed their young with milk
True or false
All fish have gills
true
All of the living and nonliving things interacting in a particular region make up:
an ecosystem
Describe a few key characteristics of a tundra
- Cold and dry with a little rain
- The winters are long and dark.
- It is located in the polar climate zone
Describe a few key characteristics of a boreal forest
- Summers are short and winters are cold and long.
- It is located in the temperate climate zone.
- Most of the trees in a boreal forest are evergreens and conifers
Describe a few key characteristics of a deciduous forest
- Exists in Europe and the United States where seasons change.
- The forest is made up of oak and maple trees which shed their leaves in the fall.
- Their leaves are usually broad.
What are characteristics of amphibians?
- They lay their soft and jelly-like eggs in water
- Adults breath using their lungs and moist skin
- They must live in wet or moist environments
Which tool would be best to measure the volume of a small object?
graduated cylinder
Which tool would be best to measure the weight of a cat?
scale
What happens when you heat up ice?
the ice turns into water, a liquid
How are birds different from reptiles?
- Birds have a constant internal body temperature
- Birds have wings
- Birds have feathers
When a solid is heated, what does it usually change into before it becomes a gas?
liquid
Describe what happens at a cold front when a cold air mass meets a warm air mass
At cold front, cold air pushes under warm air. As the warm air rises, water vapor condenses to form clouds. Cold fronts move quickly, causing strong winds and heavy rains. Thunderstorms often occur along cold fronts. As the cold front passes, the sky clears and the weather gets cooler.
Describe the motion of atoms in a gas
Atoms move freely
Precipitation is water that comes from the sky. List the four main types of precipitation.
- Rain
- Snow
- Sleet
- Hail
How does snow form?
Water vapor freezes into crystals
How does rain form?
Tiny water droplets collide and form larger drops that fall to the ground
High pressure usually brings what type of weather?
dry and sunny weather
What tool is used to measure air pressure?
barometer
Name some characteristics common to all fish
- Lives in water
- Gills
- Fins
- Backbone
- Body temperature that changes with surroundings
Name some characteristics common to reptiles
- Dry and scaly skin
- Eggs with tough, leathery shells
- Body temperature that changes with surroundings
How can a mammal be born?
- born and then crawl into a pouch
- born live
- hatch from an egg
Which groups of vertebrates have an internal body temperature that stays the same no matter how the temperature of the surroundings changes?
birds and mammals
Which groups of vertebrates have an internal body temperature that changes with the surroundings?
fish, amphibians, and reptiles
Name the climate zone that has cold winters and warm summers
Temperate
Name the climate zone that is located near the equator and is warm all year long
Tropical
Name the climate zone that is cold and icy all year long
Polar
Which ecosystem has a warm, wet climate with a constant air temperature and rain every day?
Tropical rainforest
Which ecosystem usually has just a little bit of rain, extreme temperatures, and sand dunes?
Desert
Where can you find evergreen trees?
Deciduous forest
Name the particles that make up all matter
Atoms
At what temperature does water freeze?
0°C
At what temperature does water boil?
100°C
Where would a person weigh more, on the moon or on Earth?
On Earth
How many mm is 1cm?
10mm
