Semester 1 Labs- 1-3 Flashcards

1
Q

Does sex affect grip strength? and Why?

A

YES
-greater levels of testosterone
-greater levels of muscular hypertrophy
-greater amount of individual muscle fibres- greater mm than body mass

Q

Does forearm volume affect grip strength? Why?

A

YES
A greater forearm volume leads to a greater muscle mass which means the arm is able to produce more strength

Q

If you were to design a study investigating what affects mm what else would you measure?

A

-Fat mass through a Dexter Scan/ MRI scan
-Age group- strength
-Skin fold= percentage of MM
-Ethical considerations (radiation) and very expensive

Q

Why is it necessary to correct VE to STPD ?

A

Standardised Temp and Pressure of Dry Gas
Gas volumes, pressures and temperatures vary from different days so in order to compare gases they must be standardised.

Q

How do we calculate Vt?

A

Tidal Volume

= VE/ f (breathing frequency)

Q

What are the main important steps when taking expired air collection?

A
  1. Evacuate the Douglas Bags
  2. Make sure you open the bag at the right times and time the amount of time the participant is breathing
  3. Standardise the air flow for approx five minutes to insure the resting air is the participants and not from the room.

Q

Is FVC influenced by stature?

A

FVC= forced vital capacity

Yes, a larger, taller and greater height allows a greater amount of air to be forced out.

Q

How do you calculate Work Rate/ Power Output?

A

W= (applied mass x 9.81) (1.672 x flywheel revolutions)
/
60 (time in seconds)

(9.81= gravity)

9
Q

Why do we measure air collection time for each Douglas bag?

A

Due to the collection being in a minute it provides us with minute ventilation (VE)- measured in minutes.

Q

Why do we complete the Haldane Transformation?

A

To get the volume of air inspired(Vi)

Inspired Air ( we have the expired in the Douglas bag)

Q

Does resting VO2 vary between participants, if so what is the variation related to?

A

YES
Resting VO2 varies between participants- muscle mass size, higher metabolic rates, Age, Sex
and PRIOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

15
Q

Why do we typically expect our RER to be between 0.7 and 1?

Why may it change with an increase in intensity?

A

When you actually look at the molecules equations it makes sense:

Pure Fat Oxidation
2302+ C16 H32 O2———-16CO2+ 16 H2O

(RER= 16CO2/ 2302= 0.7)

Pure Carbohydrate Oxidation
6 O2 + C6 H12 06————- 6CO2 +6 H20

(RER= 6CO2 / 602 = 1.0)

-Move from using fats (lower RER) to carbs (higher RER)

Q

What condition during exercise will result in an RER over 0.1?

A

Hyperventilation
VO2 max reached
More anaerobic work- buffering and increased CO2
