Semester 1 Finals Flashcards
What are the six methods to search a crime scene?
Link method, line (strip) method, grid method, zone method, spiral method, Ray method
What is the link method?
There’s no specific pattern, look for evidence that links to specific places in area
What is the line (strip) method?
People walk in a straight line in rows, arm length away from each other looking on ground for evidence
What is the grid method?
Used for large outdoor crime scenes, same as the line method except you create a grid
What is the zone method?
Used on crime scenes of really definable zones, such as houses. Teams are assigned zones, then other searching methods are done in each zone
What is the spiral method?
Used on crime scenes with no physical barriers such as open water, start in the area you are searching and you can either go in an inward spiral or an outward spiral
what is The Wheel/Ray method?
Used on small circular crime scenes, investigators start from important spot and travel outward along many straight lines from the important spot
What physiological responses are measured during a polygraph test?
Heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, skin conduction
Why is it important to establish baselines during a polygraph test?
To have a reference on how the subject’s body responds when they are telling the truth
What is a polygraph test?
A test that helps determine the truthfulness of someone who may be connected to a possible crime
Is a polygraph test 100% reliable?
No
What are antigens?
Red blood cell surface markers
What are antibodies?
A protein that reacts with an antigen
What is agglutination?
Clumping of red blood cells when testing blood compatibly
What are the four blood types?
Group A, group B, group AB, and group O
People with this blood type are universal donors
Type O blood
What is a chromosome?
Long DNA molecule with part of or all genetic material of an organism
What do restriction enzymes do?
They cut up DNA into different sized fragments
What sized fragments of DNA move through gel electrophoresis faster?
Smaller ones
What is the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
All nerves in the body
What is cholesterol?
Fat like substance found in all cells in the body
Why do we need cholesterol?
To build the structure of cell membranes
Why is having too much cholesterol bad?
Raises risk for heart disease and stroke
What is HDL?
High-density lipoprotein
What is LDL?
Low-density lipoprotein
