Semester 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is lymphedema and why does it develop
A
chronic condition- abnormal collection of protein-rich fluid causing tissue fluid
caused by a compromised lymphatic system
2
Q
How does lymphoedema differ from the peripheral oedema seen in heart failure?
A
lymphedema is non-pitting and caused by lymphatic dysfunction
peripheral oedema is pitting oedema caused by chronic salt and water retention that leads to a raised hydrostatic pressure
3
Q
What is a competitive inhibitor?
A
molecule that prevents/ slows down an enzyme reaction by reversibly binding at its active site
4
Q
Explain what Vmax and Km are
A
Vmax= maximal rate when all enzyme active sites are saturated with substrate Km= substrate concentration that gives half the maximal velocity
