What’s a semantic?
A base meaning-> semantic field: words from same group.
Semantics: what’s collocates?
Words linked via common association.ie: Salt+pepper,bread+butter.
Patterns in text: lots of collocates
What are hypernyms?
When general word used in text ie: fruit
What’s hyponym?
When specific word used in text. ie: Apple.
What’s euphemism?
When text producers hide or soften the truth. ie: labelling prison as ‘correctional facility’
What’s dysphemism?
Unpleasant version of euphemism.
ie: labelling mentally ill person as ‘loony’
Pragmatics: what’s a denotation?
Dictionary definition of a word ie: Snake= reptile, Doll=toy
Pragmatics: what’s a connotation?
Emotional attachment with the word and what word implies.
ie: snake= evil, traitor,sly person.
Doll= pretty person
Red=passion
Manly=strong
Pragmatics:what’s deixis?
Word not in persons vocabulary.
ie: I saw him today, person that’s joined convo would say who’s him?
Pragmatics: what’s deictic reference?
Comment depending on context or isolated those not part of group.
What’s discourse structure?
How text is structured, journey text takes from start to finish.
Discourse: what’s referencing?
Text looking forward and back. ie: Rachel drove to work, she then walked into her class and she then made a cup of tea.
Discourse: what’s anaphoric references?
Look back at what’s already been said. ie: Replacing ‘Rachel’ with ‘she’
Anaphoric: I hate Rachel as she is mean to me.
Discourse: Whats cataphoric references?
Look forward to what’s been said. Ie: After ‘she’ drove to work, ‘Rachel’ walked into her class.
What’s Graphology?
How a text appears, ie: How web page makes it easier for person to discover how font differs in a text than other areas.
