Semantic And Syntactic Fallacies (multiple meanings) Flashcards
semantic - words with multiple meanings
Syntactic - rules of acceptable grammar and sentence structure
Semantic solution - add qualifying words to clarify intended meaning
Syntactic solution - rearrange words to avoid multiple interpretations
Language is complex and fluid - meanings evolve and change over time - can lead to misleading meanings in illogical ways
Vagueness - unable to distinctly define - baldness
Vagueness - 2 types - degree (baldness) - context (relevant comparison - tall)
Solution for Vagueness - specify degree (point when change occurs) and context (tall for a 10 year old)
Equivocation - when 2 different meanings of the same word are fallaciously used within the same argument
Fallacious amphiboly - same as equivocation - using multiple meanings within argument - difference is equivocation involves words (semantic) and fallacious amphiboly involves meanings within sentences (syntactic) - same principle - mixing meanings within an argument makes an argument doubly fallacious
