Overview - informal fallacies - Chapter 5 - Critical Thinking Flashcards
2 step critical thinking screening strategy applies to all types of fallacies - deductive or inductive
1 - conclusion follows premises - validly (deductive) or strongly (inductive)
2 - premises are true
Informal fallacies involve the larger context within which claims and arguments are made - structure can be fine but truth or falsity is determined by context - the fascinating
quality of informal fallacies is that each can be either true of false depending on context
Strategy to avoid informal fallacies -
keep clear and precise focus on argument itself and it’s terms and
not upon the opponent or irrelevant features
Informal fallacies are contextual - can cut both ways - can be either true or false depending on context
Informal fallacies are both common mistakes and pervasive purposeful practices (we often use them to advance our subjective viewpoint)
