Self Reports (key Words) Flashcards
Self reports
A research method
That obtains data by asking ppts to provide info about themselves.
Questionnaires
A self report research method
that uses a set of questions to obtain info from a respondent about a topic of interest
Interviewers
A self report research method that involves the researcher asking ppts questions
Social desirability bias
The attempt to present oneself in the best light based on what is socially acceptable.
Demand characteristics
Cues that might indicate the study’s aims to ppts which can lead them to alter their behaviours to match the perceived aim of the researcher.
Interviewer bias
When the behaviour, speech, opinions or expectations of an interviewer affects the ppts behaviour, speech or judgment.
Response bias
A tendency to provide inaccurate/false info to questions.
(Saying yes to everything)
Psychometric tests
A test that measures specific psychological characteristics to quantify a characteristic that would be otherwise difficult to measure
Filler questions
Questions put alongside the real questions in a questionnaire to conceal the real aim of the study to reduce the risk of demand characteristics and social desirability bias (prevents ppts to alter behaviour)
Structured interview
Every question is predetermined. There is no deviation from the interview schedule. Consistency is required for the interviewers posture, voice, so they are standardised.
Unstructured interview
An interview style that collects data on a topic with no set patterns and subsequent questions develop on the basis of the answers given. Conversational.
Semi structured interview
Some preset questions are written but there is an opportunity for the researcher to ask further questions.
Open questions
Ppts give attitudes/opinions and recall their experiences in their own words. With no pre set options to choose from.
Closed questions
Offer responses to choose from.
Surveys
Large scale questionnaires that aim to gain insight into a particular behaviour, attitude, or group. But its very limited and prone to bias and low validity.
