self report techniques Flashcards
what is a questionnaire
use pre prepared questions to gather data from large samples of ppts. They should alllow a large amount of data to be gathered in a short amount of time (compared to other methods e.g interviews). They can provide both quantitative and qualitative data. There are two tpes of Qs the researcher can use, open and closed.
advantages of using open ended questions in questionnaires
detailed response
insight into unexpected validity
natural- internal validity
disadvantages of using open ended questions in questionnaires
harder to analyse
practical issues e.g children
advantages of using closed ended questions in questionnaires
time efficient
easier to anlayse
disadvantages of using closed ended questions in questionnaires
lack detail and insight
limited range of data
limitations of using questionnaires
sample can be biased due to who is filling it out
can take lots of time to design
can only be filled out by those who can read and write
strengths of using questionnaires
once it has been designed you can use them for lots of people quickly and cheaply
may feel comfortable to reveal personal info
reduces experimenter bias which can be found in interviews
what is a unstructured interview
these are much more open
the interviewer asks questions in response to the interviewees previous answer.
what is a structured interview
when an interview has pre determined questions they want to ask. the exact same wording and ordering of the questions is used for every interviewee
strengths of using strucuted interview
high in reliabilty because it can be repeated and can easily compare results
limitation of using structured intervew
limited range of data
lacks validity
strengths of using unstructured interview
greater range in data
more detailed information
limitations of using unstructured interview
more likely to have interviewer bias
more skills needed- more expensive
