Self-Report Techniques Flashcards
What are the two types of self-report techniques?
- questionnaire
- interview
What is a questionnaire?
Made up of a pre-set list of written questions (or items) to which a participant responds
Why can questionnaires be used as part of an experiment?
To assess the DV
Strengths of questionnaires:
- Easily distributed to a large sample = cost-effective
- Less chance of social desirability bias compared to an interview
Limitations of questionnaires:
- Social desirability can be possible
- Response bias = may favour a particular kind of response
What is an interview?
Face-to-face interaction between an interviewer and interviewee
What are the three different types of interviews?
- Structured interview
- Unstructured interview
- Semi-structured interview
What is a structured interview?
List of pre-determined questions in a fixed order
Strengths of the structured interview:
-Easy to replicate = standardised = reduces differences between interviewers
Limitations of the structured interview:
-Interviewees cannot elaborate = can be a source of frustration
What is the unstructured interview?
No set of questions, a general topic to be discussed but interaction is free-flowing and the interviewees are encouraged to elaborate
Strength of an unstructured interview:
Greater flexibility = more insight
Limitations of an unstructured interview:
Difficult to replicate = risk of interviewer bias
What is a semi-structured interview?
List of questions that have been worked out in advance but interviewers are free to ask follow-up questions when appropriate
