The 3 examples of closed questions/items?
Likert scale, rating scale, fixed-choice option.
What are likert scales?
The respondent indicates their agreeement with a statement using a scale, usually around 5 points; ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
What are rating scales?
Respondents identify a value that represents their strength of feeling about a particular topic; ranging from 1-5.
What are fixed-choice options?
Includes a list of possible options and respondents are required to indicate those that apply to them.
How should interviews be designed?
• interview schedule (list of questions the interviewer intends to cover), should be standardised to reduce effect of interviewer bias.
• one-to-one interviews should be conducted in a quite room, away from other people, increasing the likelihood the interviewee will open up.
• good practice to begin the interview with neutral questions to make the interviewee feel comfortable and relaxed, and as a way of establishing rapport.
What can errors in question designs lead to?
Effect the quality of information received.
What are some common errors in question design?
Overuse of jargon, emotive language & learning questions, and double-barrelled questions & double negatives.
What is jargon?
Technical terms that are only familiar to those within a specialised field or area, can be unnecessary complex.
How can emotive language effect the question’s design?
A researcher’s attitude towards a particular topic is creat from the way in which the question is phrased, remove heavily emotive words with more neutral alternatives.
How can leaning questions affect the question’s design?
Guide the respondent towards a particular answer.
How can double-barrelled questions effect the question’s design?
Contains 2 questions in one, respondents may agree with one half and not the other.
How can double negatives effect the questions design?
Can be difficult for respondents to decipher.
