What is self-esteem?
Refers to your evaluation of your own self-worth and attitude towards yourself. Your beliefs about who you are (personality, looks and abilities) contribute
What is healthy self-esteem?
Helathy self-esteem means having a general positive perception of yourself. You feel comfortable about who you are and how you look. You will be able to deal with difficulties and take them in your stride
What is a low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem means that your beliefs about yourself is mostly negative. You may focus more on your weakness and mistakes, then positive things about yourself. Study show people with low self-esteem levels are more likely to battle with stress, anxiety and depression
What is the selfie society?
Celebrity culture and social media has played a role in creating a society that is very me-orientated. It can’t get any more me-orientated than a selfie. The selfie society plays on our motions and how we see ourselves. We are constantly comparing ourselves to our friend selfies
What is self-esteem influenced by?
Your self-esteem may be influenced by a number of external factors such as peers, education, family, culture, religion, our community and media
What is peer pressure?
The social pressure we experience to conform with the expectations of our peer group. It can be negative or positive
What is positive peer pressure?
Positive influence. Friends can be a fantastic source of support. Fun and meaningful friendships contribute to a positive self image. Refers to direct or indirect pressure to engage in positive behavior
What is negative peer pressure?
Negative impact on our behavior. Lead us to behave in a way that is out of character, behavior we may later regret
How can we handle negative peer pressure?
- Learn to pay attention to your own feelings about what is wrong or right
- Choose friends who have similar values of you
- If you cannot find the courage to say no, walk away and ignore the criticism
What is social comparison?
Can I have a huge impact on self-esteem. Some comparisons can be unhealthy. Tends to create general negative emotions within us, for example anxiety, depression, lying etc. There are two types
What are the two forms of social comparison?
Upward and downward’s
What is upward social comparison?
Comparing ourselves to those who we view as better than us
What is downwards social comparison?
Comparing ourselves to those who review as worse off than us
What is cultural identity?
our culture shapes our identity, influence how we experience life and impacts our self-esteem. It guides our behaviors, thoughts and senses of who we are. Research has shown that our self-esteem is influenced by whether or not we feel we are living up to our cultural values
What is celebrity culture?
We look up celebrities on social media and aspire to these unrealistic images of perfection. The result is feeling like we need to live up to these images
What is the biggest problem in South African schools?
Bullying is the biggest problem in South African schools. Cyber bullying is also an issue. South Africa is rated second highest in the world in terms of cyber bullying statistics. This is a form of negative peer pressure
What percentage of teenagers have been bullied in their high school career?
57% of teenagers have been bullied in high school career
What is bullying?
It is defined as negative physical and verbal actions and intentionally harm, intimidate or coerce someone, and repeated overtime
How do we identify a bully?
- Physical: negative physical attacks such as hitting, kicking, punching or destroying properties
- Verbal: name-calling, teasing, aggressive language, making fun of people
- Emotional/social: spreading rumors, being left out of a group, pressure to do something you do not want to do
- Cyber bullying: use of technology to harass or intimidate someone
- Prejudicial bullying: prejudices based on race, religion or sexual orientation
What is banter?
Banter is peaceful teasing or joking between friends and is typically an equal and funny exchange.
What can happen when banter escalates?
Verbal bullying can happen when Banta escalates. The person making the comment might believe that what they are saying is a joke, in reality it is hurtful

What is playing on an insecurity in terms of stages in psychology of being bullied?
Bullies pick on vulnerable people, as they are looking to control and feel powerful. They focus on something unique about them or an insecurity they may have
What is self criticism in terms of the psychology and stages of being bullied?
The victim starts to blame themselves for being a victim and become self critical
What is trying to change in terms of the stages of being bullied psychology?
They often try to change or mask the characteristic they are being bullied about. This may change the way they dress or say things that they don’t feel is right to be accepted
What is the long term affects in terms of stages of being bullied and psychology?
The long-term effect is the negative impact on someone’s mental and physical health
