Self Determination Theory Flashcards
Constructs of SDT
Autonomy, Relatedness, Competence, and the Continuum of Motivation
Autonomy (SDT Construct)
We make our own choices about what we are doing in our lives and the direction it is taking. Do things with a full sense of willingness (no coercement, not because you have to); It is about choice and doing what you want, how you want. (Not everyone likes that because some want structure)
Example of Autonomy (SDT Construct)
Can look at some things in different ways; Do things in class that you do not want to do but you signed on for them and there are things you do not want to do. If you can tie your courses you choose to your life you will feel like you have more control
Relatedness (SDT Construct)
Feeling that you have a soft place to land or fall; Like you have connection, like if you disappeared someone would notice, and caring for and being cared for (not like you have friends, like you need someone and someone needs you)
Example of Relatedness (SDT Construct)
D-Up, Energy you feel because they were glad that you were there; Getting help on something that shows someone has your back; Not like others call the shots
Competence (SDT Construct)
Trying and learning new things while measuring or acknowledging your mastery (No sense of pumping someone up with false praise) How people can apply their strengths
Example of Competence (SDT Construct)
Finding the perfect amount of stretch; Opportunity to develop mastery and being able to acknowledge
Continuum of Motivation
External Regulation, Introjected Regulation, Identified Regulation, Integrated Regulation, Intrinsic Regulation
External Regulation (CoM SDT)
External rewards and punishments; Motivated to comply for external positive or negative consequences (May be the best thing to use for big groups of people to do something for their own betterment/ to better society
Example of External Regulation (CoM SDT)
If you were driving somewhere and there were no cops you would speed but you don’t because there are cops around; Get steps for health insurance discount not because you want to or it is important to you
Introjected Regulation (CoM SDT)
Type of extrinsic motivation made internal (Rewards and punishments but they are internal); Utilizes behaviors that will limit anxious thoughts while processing adaptations; People do things to make themselves feel good or worth something (Use with dramatic relief)
Example of Introjected Regulation (CoM SDT)
Being motivated to go to church because not a good person if they don’t go (Motivated by the feeling of guilt)
Identified Regulation (CoM SDT)
hat a person values and feels is important to themself; Feels outside of us but we personality value it and make a conscious decision to do it (Has not fully been brought in) Consistent with our values but isn’t exactly who we are
Example of Identified Regulation (CoM SDT)
We go to class to gain knowledge because it is important to do so not necessarily because it is enjoyable; Want to go to med school but do not love microbiology- Fits into a goal that we value
Integrated Regulation (CoM SDT)
Different than identified because it is much closer to ones core values; Central to values and who you are
