Self determination theory Flashcards
What is the critical part of the self determination theory?
developing a sense of autonomy and competence leads to internalization and integration so the person can better self-regulate their health behavior. You engage in behavior that is congruent or consistent with maintaining this sense of self (i.e., I am a vegetarian). Other theories don’t talk about autonomy.
What is autonomy?
It is the sense that you are driving your own behaviours
What is an autonomy supportive health care climate?
A treatment atmosphere that encourages individuals to engage in health conducive behaviours for their own reasons, facilitates success in dealing with barriers to change, and conveys feelings of acceptance and respect.
When a doctor or clinician is supportive it leads to more psychological need satisfaction.
What is needed to be autonomy supportive?
Provide relevant information and meaningful rationales for change.
Support patients decisions and interests (they get to pick what they like)
Understanding patients perspective
What is a controlling health care climate?
“A treatment atmosphere that controls people’s behaviours through means such as offering tangible rewards of externally pressuring them toward practitioner valued behaviours of outcomes”
Leads to psychological frustration
Can controlling ever be useful?
It can be at the very beginning of the initiation but it needs to move towards autonomy. Try to avoid: Incentives, using authority, rewards and contingent approval.
What is autonomous orientation? (personality differences in autonomy)
“an orientation reflective individual’s engagement in behaviours based on interest and personal values”
What is impersonal orientation?
“an orientation in which individuals believe that attaining desired outcomes is beyond their control”
What is controlled orientation?
“an orientation in which individuals engage in an activity focusing on external controls of directives”
What is an intrinsic aspiration?
“personal goals related to one’s growth, community involvement, and meaningful relationships”
What is an extrinsic goal?
“personal goals relating to wealth, fame and image”
What are the 3 qualities of psychological needs?
- Innate: born with them
- Fundamental: can not be broken down into anything else
- Essential nutrients: necessary for optimal psychological function
What are the 3 psychological needs impacted by?
social environment, personality differences in autonomy, and life aspirations
What are the 3 psychological needs?
Competence: feeling as though you can successfully complete optimally challenging tasks (for the individual)
Autonomy: Acting in accord with your own desires rather than through external or internal pressure; being true to yourself; fully integrating oneself
Relatedness: feeling a sense of belonging and meaningful to other people
What do you target to change behaviour?
Try to enhance the satisfaction of psychological needs and reduce the frustration of needs
