Q

What is the critical part of the self determination theory?

A

developing a sense of autonomy and competence leads to internalization and integration so the person can better self-regulate their health behavior. You engage in behavior that is congruent or consistent with maintaining this sense of self (i.e., I am a vegetarian). Other theories don’t talk about autonomy.

16
Q

How do you change psychological needs?

A

Change the social environment
Help people set intrinsic life aspirations (goals)
Help people internalize the behaviour and be more autonomous

17
Q

How do you change autonomy satisfaction?

A

It is tough bc health behaviours are not inherently fun. Most people start behaviour because of external pressure which can still be valued because it provides rationale for change. Provide a support agency, provide options, and ask for their perspective

18
Q

Changing competence satisfaction

A
Provide effectance-relevant feedback
Help them find the skills and tools for change
Do not over challenge a patient
Help patient feel mastery in small steps
Find behaviours they're good at
19
Q

Change relatedness satisfaction

A

Provide input and guidance to facilitate a good relationship with patient
Respect, understand, and care for patient
Enhance connection and trust.
Encourage activities with family and friends

20
Q

What is the evidence for self determination theory?

A

Results from a meta analysis:
184 studies testing SDT in health domain, Effect sizes were moderate in magnitude,Overall pattern of results supported theoretical model
