Self, Death And The Afterlife Flashcards
What are mortal and venial sins
Mortal = unforgivable Venial = forgivable
What are the three purposes to life
To glorify god and have a personal relationship with him
Preparing for judgement
To bring about God’s kingdom on earth
What did Jesus say to make Christians glorify god
“Give glory to your father who is in heaven”
How may Christians build a more intimate relationship with god
Prayer
Modelling lives off Jesus
Studying the bible
What does the sheep and the goats parable teach Christians about the purpose of life
To prepare for judgement day by doing good deeds to all
What are the two opposing views on God’s kingdom on earth
- heaven comes to earth if we follow gods will
- this is not literally possible and time and space will end, then heaven.
What were Plato’s two modes of existence
The physical world - a reflection of a deeper reality
The world of the forms - a world where time etc doesn’t exist
What was Plato’s idea of the soul
The human soul is a link between the two worlds.
The soul separates from the body at death and goes to the world of the forms before being reincarnated into the physical world.
Dualism = humans have the physical body and the spiritual soul.
What does the quote “today you will Be with me in paradise” show about resurrection
That it is spiritual and not physical
What did Augustine believe about resurrection
That it was physical where both spiritual and physical effects of sin would be removed as you would get an idealised body in heaven
Why do some people believe that resurrection is physical
Because it happened to Christ so it is possible to happen anyone.
What did Paul believe about resurrection
At the end of day we will all be risen from the dead and have both parts of us resurrected, but with our body’s completely different from when we die
State 2 important quotes from 1 Corinthians 15
“What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable”
“The first man was from earth…the second man from heaven”
Is resurrection bodily or spiritual
Bodily:
- we can experience physical pleasures
- it happened to Jesus
- we can identify those who have died
- god is omnipotent so he can do it at end of days
- get a new body in heaven
Spiritual:
- body’s decay (science)
- what body will go to heaven? (what about infants)
- Spirit is God given
Explain judgement, heaven, hell and purgatory as physical
- the thought in most traditional Christian history
- the physical body will enjoy the delights of heaven or pains of hell and people believed this due to what was going on at the time (Roman persecution)
- sinners could go on pilgrimages or make donations to make up for it
Explain judgement, heaven, hell and purgatory as spiritual
- this is a much more modern view
- heaven: joy, peace, love, god
- hell: absence of god, no peace
- purgatory means nothing as there is no time
Explain judgement, heaven, hell and purgatory as psychological
- there is no evidence for life after death
- bring about heaven on earth
- in this world we can experience psychological hell = someone’s beliefs clash resulting in inner conflict and self destructive behaviour.
- this can be restored through reflection and therapy
- ## a person who is spiritual fulfilled experiences a state of contentment
What is process theology
The view that god and the universe have always existed together
What is object and subject immortality
Object = After death, all beings in the universe remain forever as objects in the mind of god. (Process theology) Subject = After death, we exist as thinking feeling subjects with thoughts and memories.
What’s the problem with object immortality
Some see it as meaningless as if after death, we are no longer conscious and have no experience/memories, why does it matter if we are in gods memory.
