Religious Identity Flashcards
Describe Jesus’ last supper
- Jesus washed their feet to show he was their servant
- Jesus refused wine as it wasn’t appropriate to celebrate until he completed his mission = “I shall not drink from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes”
- breaking the bread symbolises his body being ripped apart
- Jesus tells his disciples to spread the word of god
Describe the people who don’t believe in mission at all
Quakers - God speaks to the heart of people and so this interferes with his work
The Exclusive Brethren
- in order to be saved they must keep themselves distanced from the sin-contaminated world
- mission is therefore impossible
Arguments against infant baptism
- Jesus baptised at 30
- children likely to sin as they don’t know better, should teach them right from wrong and let them wash away these sins
- infants are bonded with god in lots of ways (family, community, birth)
- Acts never specifies baptism in the early church
Describe the mission as helping the poor and disadvantaged
Seen by Paul when he travelled and collected money to support the more disadvantaged people
Christian Aid
- provide aid to less economically developed countries
- provide aid to countries after major disasters
- no aim to convert anyone, done because Jesus said to do these things
Explain what happened at Jesus baptism
- John asked Jesus why he’s being baptised and he replied saying he need to be
- once baptised the heavens opened up and gods voice came down and said “this is my beloved son in who I am well pleased”
- this was the start of Jesus ministry on earth
Describe RCC holy communion
- always carried out by an ordained priest
- children around the age of 7/8 when they can do it
- the priest: cups his hands to call down the Holy Spirit, raises the bread above his head and speaks a passage.
- they believe in transubstantistion = bread and wine transformed into the blood and body of Christ
- all leftovers consumed by priest
Describe Baptist holy communion
- they remember the actions and words of Jesus
- usually performed by a minister (can be anyone though)
- bread and wine passed along from person to person
- ‘all who move the lord’ can receive it
- bread and wine undergo no change
- leftovers are thrown away
Describe the mission as helping the Christian community
The church has a duty of care for faithful Christians in their own communities.
Fresh Expressions
- as secularisation is on the rise, the c of e set up this
- takes Christianity to where the people are instead of them having to go to church (eg schools, cafes etc)
- worship focuses on interests of the congregation, rather than being traditional.
Describe the mission as evangelism
- this is persuading others to become Christians
The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM)
- opened/built schools, hospitals in countries that aren’t Christian and encouraged people to attend church as they did so
Alpha
- originally aimed at members of the church but encouraged to bring family/friends along
- aims to persuade people into Christian faith through discussion about any and all questions about it.
Explain orthodox/Catholic baptism
- seen as a sacrament
- you are born with original sin through the fall
- the baptism frees you from this sin
- in an emergency, any water and anyone can do this
Arguments in favour of infant baptism
+ new borns can receive God’s grace
+ god is impossible to fully understand, so if you have to wait until you understand the importance, you won’t ever do it
+ children can be brought up as members of the church
+ In Acts, it it shown families were baptised in the early church
What did Jesus say about baptism
“Unless one is born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of god”
Explain believers baptist baptism
- not a sacrament
- does not baptise infants
- don’t believe in original sin
- individuals are educated before so they understand the importance
What important quote from Jesus can be used loads in this section
“Go and make disciples of all nations, (baptising them)“
