Self Control Flashcards

1
Q

What connects the Hypothalamus to the nervous system?

A

The pituitary gland connects the hypothalamus to the nervous system, so that the nervous system can control the entire endocrine system.

Q

Explain how GH growth hormone is regulated and released through the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary gland?

A

Growth Hormone (GH) is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland when the growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), and is stopped by the growth hormone-inhibiting hormone (GHIH).

Q

When is GHRH secreted & why?

A

It’s secreted when hypoglycemia when there are not enough carbs or when there’s a need to use protien (amino acids) to build up the body.

Q

When is GHIH secreted & why?

A

Its secreted during hyperglycemia because there are more than enough carbs to use for energy unlike in hypo where growth hormone is necessary. Also when fat mobilization is not required.

Q

How is TSH Thyroid Stimulating Hormone secreted and why?

A

It’s secreted from the pituitary gland after the hypothalamus releases the Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH), and TSH is used to stimulate the growth and secretions of the thyriod gland.

Q

How is ACTH Adrenocorticotropic Hormone secreted & why?

A

So the Corticotropin-releasing hormone stimulates ACTH release from the pituitary to increase cortisol which increases sugar during stress, injury, disease, exercise, and hypoglycemia.

Q

SATA which of these includes the purpose of ADH?

  1. Increases water reabsorption by kidney tubules
  2. Increases water output
  3. Maintains normal BP
  4. Can cause severe hemorrhage
  5. Causes dilation lowering BP
  6. Creates the contraction necessary for giving birth
  7. Allows for release of milk after pregnancy
A

Answer: 1, 3

Decreases urine output due to increased water absorption in kidney tubules, this helps maintain the normal BP

Does not cause hemorrhage, but actually causes vasoconstriction helping to stop it

Does the opposite of dilation

Creating contractions, and milk release is Oxytocin not ADH

Q

SATA What are the functions of T3 & T4?

  1. Increase cellular respiration of lipids & cortisol
  2. Increases metabolic rate (energy)
  3. Heat production
  4. physical growth
  5. mental development
  6. reproductive maturation
  7. Nerve stimulation
A

Answer: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

It increases cellular respiration of glucose and fatty acids, this ten increases energy and heat production

It does not function as a nerve stimulator

Q

A PT must increase their Iodine intake to increase their T3 & T4 production which foods may help the PT

  1. Cod
  2. Dried seaweed
  3. Fortified Iodine salt
  4. Chem salt
  5. Kiwi
A

Answer: 1, 2, 3

Iodine fortified salt, and seafood contain iodine consider how salty most seafood is to remember this.
