Selective Breeding Flashcards
What is selective breeding?
Selective breeding involves choosing parents with particular characteristics to breed together and produce offspring with more desirable characteristics.
How is selective breeding done in animals?
It is carried out in the following way: A male and female organism are selected which display the desired characteristic (e.g. high meat production) The parents are bred together to produce offspring. The offspring which also display the desired characteristic are selected and bred together.
How is selective breeding done in plants?
A plant is first selected by identifying the plant with phenotype of interest, such that good genes combination for desirable trait are picked out. The plant is then allowed to grow and self fertilise or cross fertilise with other plants of similar phenotype of interest.
