Genetic Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic engineering?
A
Genetic engineering (also called genetic modification) is a process that uses laboratory-based technologies to alter the DNA makeup of an organism.
2
Q
How is genetic engineering done in plants?
A
The gene of interest is transferred into the bacterium and the bacterial cells then transfer the new DNA to the genome of the plant cells.
3
Q
How is genetic engineering done in animals?
A
DNA is generally inserted into using microinjection, where it can be injected through the cell’s nuclear envelope directly into the nucleus, or through the use of viral vectors.
