selective attention Flashcards
selective attention
it’s focusing on one element and ignoring others
auditory selective attention
Auditory attention is a cognitive process that allows the listener to focus selectively on the stimulus of interest while ignoring irrelevant competing
dichotic listening
the process of receiving different auditory messages presented simultaneously to each ear.
early filter theory
Physical characteristics are analyzed automatically (or “preattentively”) at an early stage for both channels
Selective filter “lets in” only the attended information
problems with the early filter (selective) theory
*cocktail party * meaning-based switched to-be-ignored channel
Some semantic information seems to be processed in the unattended channel
- cocktail party: People can sometimes detect their names mentioned in the unattended channel
-Meaning-based switch to the to-be-ignored channel: People unconsciously switch to the unattended channel if that information provides a good continuation
late filter( selection) theory
All incoming information gets in and receives a full analysis (including semantic analysis)
-Selection occurs on the basis of the full analysis
problems with the late filter theory
- the unattended information is less likely to get fully processed as the attended information
Theoretical Synthesis: Multimode Theory
(Johnston & Heinz’s answer)
it depends
-attention is flexible
-late selection requires more attentional capacities
