selecting spearman's rho Flashcards
what is the spearman’s rho test for
spearman’s rho is aa test for correlation between two sets of values
design is not an issue as it is a relationship with two co - variables not an experiment with an IV and a DV
what is the level of data for spearman’s rho test
ordinal data
how do we interpret results from Spearman’s Rho
a value of rho is calculated from the statistical test
the calculated value of rho must be EQUAL TO OR MORE THAN the critical values in the critical value table to be significant
If the calculate value in the critical value table to be significant
If the calculated value of rho is equal or more than the critical value we reject thee null hypothesis and conclude there is a correlation
If the calculated value of rho is less than the critical we ACCEPT THE NULL and conclude there is no correlation
how do you report the results of Spearman’s Rho
As the calculated value of rho (…) is equal to/more than the critical value of rho (…) (N= … p<0.05) the result is significant
We reject the null hypothesis
There is a significant positive/negative correlation between (…) and (…)
what is Pearson’s r
Pearson’s r is a test correlation between two sets of values. The test is selected when the data are interval level
It is a parametric test
Once again, design is not an issue as it is the relationship with two co-variables not an experiment with IV and DV
how do we interpret the results of Pearson’s R
a value of r is calculated from the statistical test
The calculated value of rho must be EQUAL TO OR MORE the critical value in the critical value table to be significant
If the calculated value of rho is LESS THAN the critical value we accept the null and conclude that there is no correlation
what is df ( degrees of freedoms)
for pearson’s r
number of participants - 2
what number is used to check the critical value
degree of freedom: number of participants -2
N = number of participants
