Seizures for Pharm Flashcards
Primary goal of seizure meds
selective effect on hyperexcitable neurons
Anti-seizure meds mechanism: front line drug
decrease sodium entry into firing neurons
Anti-seizure meds mechanism: last front line drug
decrease calcium into thalamic neurons
Anti-seizure meds mechanism: barbituates/bzd
increase GABA inhibition effect
Anti-seizure meds mechanism: 2nd gen drug
decrease release/effect of excitatory amino acids
Seizure meds minor side effects
dizziness, sedation, HA, in-coordination, GI problems
Seizure meds severe side effects
liver toxicity
increase risk of birth defect
aplastic anemia/agranulocytosis
Seizure withdrawn sucessfully 60-70% depends on:
early childhood onset of seizures
normal neuro exam before withdrawal
control of seizures for 1st year
seizure free for 2 years while on meds
