What is the difference between a general and a partial seizure?
General - involves the whole body;
Partial - part of the body
What is the difference between a complex and a simple seizure?
Complex - LOC
Simple - no LOC

How can you differentiate between a seizure and syncope?
Post-ictal state
What is the criteria for status epilepticus?
> 5 min;
failure to return to baseline >20 min
How do you abort status epilepticus?
Benzodiazepines;
if benzos dont work, then fosphenytoin;
then intubate, midazolam and propofol;
then phenobarbital
What are three drugs used in generalized seizure disorder?
Valproate;
Lamotrigine
Keppra (Levetiracetam)
What is the treatment for trigeminal neuralgia?
Carbamazepine
What are absence seizures?
tone maintained, LOC hundreds of times a day
What is the treatment for absence seizures?
Ethosuximide
dx with EEG
What is an atonic seziure?
Loss of tone, no LOC
What is a myoclonic seizure?
no LOC, spastic contractions
When is valproate used in the treatment of seizure?
Atonic (also, have kids wear helmets);
Myoclonic
