seismometers and earthquakes 6 markers Flashcards
how can data from seismometers can be used to identify the location of an earthquake
the greater the distance between the earthquake and the seismometer, the greater the difference in arrival times. scientists use the difference in the arrival times of the P waves and S waves to work out out the distance from each seismometer to the place where the earthquake happened. distances from at least three seismometers in different places are used to work out where the earthquake happened
how do P and S waves travel inside the Earth including reflection and refraction
seismic waves from earthquakes travel through the earth, part of the wave is reflected at the boundaries between different layers, the speed of seismic waves changes gradually with depth because the rocks have different properties. the gradual change in wave speed makes waves travel along a curved path.
