Seismic Waves Flashcards
What is the epicenter of an earthquake?
An earthquake’s epicenter is where the seismic waves reach the surface.
What are the three types of seismic waves?
- P waves
- S waves
- Surface waves
Describe P waves
P waves are the primary seismic waves, and are the first to arrive. They shake the ground from side to side.
Describe S waves
S waves are the secondary seismic waves, and arrive second. They shake the ground both side to side and up and down. S waves can’t move through liquids.
Describe surface waves
Surface waves are what some P and S waves become when they reach the surface. They move slower than P and S waves, but can be more destructive. Surface waves make the ground roll in a wavelike motion.
What are seismic waves?
Seismic waves are energy waves that come from the center, or focus of an earthquake.
