Formerly known as “Mental Retardation”. It is characterized by below average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skill necessary for day to day living.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY
Four Different Levels of Mental Retardation
MILD MENTAL RETARDATION. (IQ 50-70)
MODERATE MENTAL RETARDATION. ( IQ 35-55)
SEVERE MENTAL RETARDATION. ( IQ 20-25)
PROFOUND MENTAL RETARDATION. (UNDER 20-25)
Approximately 85% of the mentally retarded population
They can often acquire academic skills up to about the sixth grade level
MILD MENTAL RETARDATION ( educable )
About 10% of the mentally retarded population
They can carry out work and self care task with moderate supervision
MODERATE MENTAL RETARDATION ( trainable )
About 3-4% of the mentally retarded population
Master very basic self care skills and some communications skills.
SEVERE MENTAL RETARDATION ( dependent retarded )
Only 1-2% of the mentally retarded population
May be able to develop basic self care and communication skills
PROFOUND MENTAL RETARDATION ( life support retarded )
Mental quality that consists of the abilities to learn from experience, adapt to new situation, understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one’s environment
