seeds Flashcards
what is fruit
enlarged ripened ovary, the ovarian wall forming the fruit wall encloses the seeds
what is a seed
Its the ripened ovule which contains an embryo and it develops into a new plant
seed coat
protects embryo from damage
grain
fruit in which seed coat and cell wall are merged to protect the embryo
embryo consists of
radicle(future root), plumule(future shoot)
seed has food, true or false
true it contains food for the embryo
types of seeds
Based on the endosperm the seed is divid
types of seeds
Based on the endosperm the seed is divided into two classifications
albuminous : the cotyledons are thin and membranous, endosperm persists
exalbuminous: the cotyledons store food and become thick and fleshy
describe the layers in a seed
seed coat has a outer layer called testa which is the hardest layer of the seed coat protecting the inner parts, tegman is inner layer lying close to testa it also protects the seed, There is a white whitish oval scar on the concave side of the seed, it represents the spot where ovule was attached through placentation
where is the micropyle
Micropyle is a tiny hole situated near hilum it lets water and air in
what is epicotyl
region if attaching of plumule and cotyledons is called epicotyle
what is hypocotyl
axis below the cotyledons are called hypo cotyl
aleurone layer
The outer layer of endosperm is rich in protein and is called aleurone layer
what is coleorrhiza and coleoptile
the radicle is pointed and has a protective sheath called coleaorhiza and the plumule is present at the upper broader sider and has a protective sheath called coleoptile
what is scutellum
The embryo has one single cotyledon which is called scutellum
