Sedomentary rocks Flashcards
What are three types of rocks?
Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
How is igneous rock formed
By crystallization of molten rock, (magma or lava)
How is sedimentary rock formed?
Typically formed from pre-existing rocks that were weathered, eroded, deposited compacted and cemented.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
By alteration of pre-existing rock deep within earth by heat and or pressure
What are sedimentary rocks
They are known as a secondary rock type because they are formed from other rocks. Igneous is primary.
How are sediments formed?
- weathering or breaking down of rock.
- erosion or the removal of rock. The three agents of erosion are water, wind and ice
- deposition. Loses energy drops sediments.
- Compaction sediments squeezed together.
- Cementation, dissolved minerals, precipitate between sediments.
What is calcite (CaCO2)
Natures cement that is soluble and slightly acidic water (carbonic acid)
What are the three main groups of sedimentary rocks?
- Clastic
- Chemical.
- Organic
What is a clastic rock?
A sedimentary rock that is small to large green size made of bits of rocks and minerals.
What is a chemical sedimentary rock?
A sedimentary rock that is created from evaporation when minerals precipitate from water.
What is an organic sedimentary rock?
A sedimentary rock made from organisms like shells and bones
